Earth Hour

Created to take a stand against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights (and anything else that isn't necessary, like mobile phone chargers & t.vs) for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming.

On March 31 2007, for one hour, Sydney made a powerful statement about the greatest contributor to global warming – coal-fired electricity – by turning off its lights. Over 2.2 million Sydney residents and over 2,100 businesses switched off, leading to a 10.2% energy reduction across the city. What began as one city taking a stand against global warming caught the attention of the world.

In 2008, 24 global cities will participate in Earth Hour at 8pm on March 29. Earth Hour is the highlight of a major campaign to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to take the simple steps needed to cut their emissions on an ongoing basis. It is about simple changes that will collectively make a difference – from businesses turning off their lights when their offices are empty, to households turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby.

I'm game, though i haven't organized for anyone to come over, nor do i have candles yet, so it will just be me alone in the dark, eep. Guess i'll go outside & stargaze if it's not raining :).

I won't be home at 8pm tonight, so I guess I'll be participating by accident. There will be other people in the house,but my bedroom light won't be on?
it's difficult. I'm sure all the lights etc at the wedding I'm going to will cancel it out anyway.

Sitting around with candles sounds lovely though (if you end up getting some!), I hope you have a nice evening :)

You know, a wedding (or similar) ceremony pre-planned for Earth Hour could be quite fun!

You know, a wedding (or similar) ceremony pre-planned for Earth Hour could be quite fun! That's what i thought too :). Of course i'd have to be marry myself. Thought at least that way there will be no quibbling over the colour scheme & the whole until death do us part of the vows will be honoured XD.

I assumed that it was national last year, not just limited to Sydney. I'm glad it's gaining more support! I'm also a little surprised at the 10.2% figure (wow!).

Last year I switched off everything at home (at the power point) and went with a few friends to Centrepoint Tower in the city to see everything from above. Perhaps it's the cynic in me, but I assumed the few major businesses turning off their lights (most didn't except for their large neon signs) did it more for the publicity than for any real push toward energy conservation.

I just don't understand the unnecessary use of electricity - it costs you money, so why don't you just switch stuff off?!

I still don't have plans for tonight. Might leave the house and walk around Newtown. Any plans for it yet?

It's kind of awesome that's it's gone global :). I am cynical about it all too, but i do hope it makes people think about their daily energy use a bit more.

I just don't understand the unnecessary use of electricity - it costs you money, so why don't you just switch stuff off?! Ditto i always have, as an environmentalist and a person who has grown up without heaps of cashola. Plus i just hate waste!

Actually, i ended up going to the movies with Mum, so we were in a darkened cinema, which technically counts. Heh.

I'm going to have a nice long candle lit bath followed by some reading. It's going to be great, especially the green tea bath! :}

I tried to do that, but was foiled by my roommate walking into the house and turning the lights on (he didn't care that much, apparently.) Boo!
